Key facts

An evergreen shrub with spiny leaves, rather like a dwarf holly, that grows in deep shade in ancient woods

Tiny whitish flowers appear on the upper surface of the leaves in winter and early spring, followed by single red berries

So named because bundles of stalks used to be used to clean butchers' blocks
